There’s a lot to like about the GFX. Photographer Nigel Danson recently had a chance to use the new Fujifilm GFX 50R for one of his landscape shoots. What’s the Best Camera for Landscape Photography? Files from long exposures are also clean and noise free, giving the camera great appeal for fans of long exposure landscape photography. Detail is superb, especially when it comes to surface texture and images have outstanding clarity and sharpness. One disadvantage is that there is currently a rather limited range of lenses. The FUJIFILM GFX 50R supports Full HD video recording (1920×1080, 29.97p / 25p / 24p / 23.98p, 36Mbps) and HD video recording (1280×720, 29.97p / 25p / 24p / 23.98p, 18Mbps). As a consequence of the shutter button/front control design, the on/off switch has been moved to the side of the shutter; not as convenient as having one which sits around the shutter but it’s certainly not a problem and no more awkward than with some other cameras, such as the Canon 5D series. Dimensions: 160.7 mm x 96.5 mm x 66.4 mm (6.33 x 3.80 x 2.62 in) Weight: 775 g (27.3 oz) LATEST PRICE FULL REVIEW. Just like medium format film cameras in the past, the GFX 50R has been developed in pursuit of a compact and lightweight system while delivering the ultimate picture quality for everyday snapshots and street photography. Of course, none of this matters if the ergonomics are wrong, so how well does it handle? The Fujifilm GFX 50R is the last medium format by Fuji to utilize the same 51 MP CMOS sensor that we have previously seen on a number of cameras, including the Fuji GFX 50S, Hasselblad X1D 50C / X1D II 50C and Pentax 645Z. GFX carries a large 43.8mm × 32.9mm sensor. The Fujifilm GFX 100 has a built-in vertical grip, making it easier for shooting in portrait orientation. Together with its G Mount lenses, it achieves the look and the feel that only a large format can reproduce. The difference in light can be better handled by cameras with high aperture dynamics. The GX680 is a series of medium format SLR studio system cameras that uses 120/220 roll film in a 6×8 format and introduced by Fuji in 1989. This is so much nicer to use than having to press or hold a button and turn a control dial and is a feature I’ve missed on the 50S. Overall, given the limitations of contrast-detect autofocus, Fuji has done a great job with the focus system on the GFX 50R and pushed it to its limits. The GFX system is still young and incomplete. One potential downside is that the control layout is somewhat different to the 50S, so if like me, you occasionally switch between the two cameras, there is the potential for getting confused. The FujiFilm GFX system has been on my radar since its official launch in February 2017. I’ll cover them in more detail in the full review. For sure the Fujifilm GFX 50R can be considered 'great' for certain forms of landscape photography. The 50R is certainly a much better-looking camera, though, and one which really encourages you to pick it up and have a play with it. The icing on the cake however, is the Fuji’s beautiful colour and tonality, which gives the files a distinctive look, reminiscent of the company’s film emulsions. Fuji GFX100 Fuji GFX 50R Nikon D850 Nikon Z7 Canon 5Ds/R. As well as being an excellent second body for existing 50S users, it is also a brilliant introduction to the world of medium format for those looking to upgrade from smaller sensors. Yet when the landscape to be photographed/videoed involves an erupting volcano, my personal choice would be Micro Four Thirds system with a long-focus lens. And like any mirrorless system, there is the possibility to use third party lenses via adaptors. The 50R is a slimmer and more elegant camera than the 50S, which has attracted some flak for not being the prettiest camera out there, especially when put side-by-side with its nearest rival, the Hasselblad X1D. On balance, I’d still like the D-pad to be there, but it’s a very minor niggle. Finally, towards the end of that month, after a rainstorm,… The front control dial has now been incorporated into the shutter button. He is the author of 4 books, his most recent being ‘The Art of Landscape Photography’ (co-authored with Ross Hoddinott), and has won a number of awards in various competitions, including the Take a View Landscape Photographer of the Year, International Garden Photographer of the Year, Outdoor Photographer of the Year and International Landscape Photographer of the Year. The idea of a 51.4 megapixel medium-format (ish) was hugely appealing to a landscape photographer but the combination of the price (£6199 at launch) and the small range of lenses was enough to prevent the dream becoming reality anytime soon. It was of immediate interest to landscape photographers, many of whom had previously been attracted by the image quality of medium format but put off by the cost and weight of existing systems. Luminar vs Lightroom Comparison: Which Software is Best? What I will be not be focusing too much on is the technical aspects of the Fujifilm GFX 50R. This means that some tripod plates interfere with it, making battery changes fiddly, and it precludes the use of a universal ‘L’ bracket. Image quality was never in doubt, given my previous experience with Fujifilm’s medium format range, but in use the 50R has exceeded my expectations and I imagine that it will get as much, if not more, use as my 50S. The big difference is that, for this camera, Fujifilm has dispensed with the four-way controller (‘D-pad’) on the back of the camera, which on the 50S is used for accessing certain settings such as white balance and for navigating through menus. Featuring a large 51.4MP g format CMOS image sensor and x-processor Pro image processing engine, the GFX 50R delivers superior image quality in a compact and lightweight body reminiscent of their renowned medium format film cameras widely used in street and documentary photography. Menus are generally well-organised and changing settings is quick and easy. The Fuji GFX is Fuji’s entry into what is commonly known as the medium format market. Fujifilm GFX 50R: At a glance. While it is not a great camera for fast-moving subjects, you will be rewarded with great results if you are willing to be patient. One feature which landscape photographers will appreciate is the ability to dial in manual exposures of up to an hour without the need to switch to Bulb mode and use a stopwatch. By default, it is set to change ISO settings and is somewhat vulnerable to being knocked, with the result that ISO can be inadvertently reset. It has a more minimalist design than the 50S, with fewer external controls. The sensor is not a "full-size" medium format sensor, but is instead 43.8 x 32.9 millimeters, which while a fair bit larger than a full-frame image sensor is not as large as the medium-format sensor found in cameras like the Phase One IQ4 150MP, for example. The Fujifilm GFX 50R has provided a really enjoyable shooting experience, one that is at least as good as its sibling. This weight advantage lessens slightly when adding lenses, as medium format lenses are by necessity bulkier than their 35mm counterparts, but the overall feeling is one of a very portable system. It balances well with all but the heaviest lenses attached – and with heavier lenses, it’s certainly no worse than a Sony A7r III. To simplify things further, there is a favourites menu and a customisable ‘Quick’ menu for easy access to commonly changed settings. This doesn’t make the new camera less customisable though, as the D-pad functions have been assigned to the touch screen, via swipe gestures. It’s nicely finished, with a textured grip and the dials have positive detents. Fujifilm GFX 50R for Landscape Photography. It delivers stunning results and is a really well-thought out piece of kit, which is both easy and enjoyable to use. Including illustrated articles on Fujifilm X system cameras and lenses. For example, I use a pair of manual focus Mamiya zooms, which as well as providing excellent quality, also cost less than £300 in total. It was replaced by the GX680 II in 1995. The GFX 50R is equipped with a 0.77x3. The screen tilts, which is handy when shooting low or high viewpoints – though not in portrait mode, as it only tilts in two directions, unlike the older GFX. In landscape photography, the dynamics capture of a camera is especially important. Great results can be obtained with some simple techniques and a bit of practice. Larger sensors give photographer more control on the depth of field and blurry background compared to smaller sensor when shot in same focal length and aperture. The Fujifilm GFX 50R is a medium format camera with 51.4 million pixels, backed up by an amazing lineup of Fujifilm GF lenses… so there is obviously no doubt about the image quality. Fujifilm's GFX 50R takes the image quality from the existing 50S model and wraps it in a new body with new controls and a lower price of entry. I mentioned previously that to create a worthwhile landscape, I took multiple trips to this overlook in April. Large Medium format (44 x … Another minor niggle is the placement of the battery compartment, which is on the left hand side of the body, with the door on the bottom. On the negative side, some of the customisable buttons on the rear of the camera have a rather ‘spongy’ feel to them, which is a disappointing contrast to the crisp feel of the buttons on other Fujifilm cameras. Large Medium format (44 x 33 mm) sensor Very High Resolution Sensor: 51.0MP Environmental Sealings Live-view Read the details . Speed isn’t really an issue, as medium format cameras have never been intended for fast-moving action, but this and the rather pedestrian (compared to 35mm and APS-C cameras) maximum three frames per second maximum burst speed means that it will appeal far more to landscape specialists than wildlife photographers. GOOD. I got the chance to spend two weeks in shooting in the Dolomites with the Fujifilm GFX 50R earlier this month, and here's a review I put together. I had seen wonderful, giant prints at the PhotoPlus event that were created with the Fuji GFX, and with some unbelievable Fuji deals out right now (as of right now you can get the GFX with the 63mm lens (50mm equivalent) or 45mm lens (36mm equivalent) for $1000 off), it peaked my interest on how it would do as a frequently used street camera. I love shooting seascapes in particular, and as the RPS has just added landscape photography to its Associate genres, an upcoming week’s holiday in North Devon seemed like the perfect opportunity to tackle that and the new camera. Home » Equipment » Fujifilm GFX 50R Review: The Landscape Photography Review. Fujifilm’s latest medium format mirrorless camera is the GFX 50R, which has the same internals as the GFX 50S, but in a cheaper, more compact body. Like all my reviews it's in no way technical or focused on specs or comparisons, but instead based on my experiences shooting with the camera and working with it in the field. The Fujifilm GFX 50R in ‘Real Life Use’ The Fujifilm GFX 50R is quick to set up and highly customisable. In shooting landscapes, you are almost always confronted with bright areas (sky) and dark areas (shadows in the foreground). I used a 15-stop ND filter to shoot a fifteen minute exposure and managed to compose, meter, set exposure, and focus all with the filter in place. Fujifilm GFX 50S for Landscape Photography. The images, when viewed through the LCD screen and then on my iMac, are probably the best I have seen in terms of image quality . Despite the slight oddity of having two very similar cameras in a niche market, it looks as if Fujifilm should have another hit with this new offering. The color processing and the film simulations that you can use with the GFX is great for nature and landscape photography. A dedicated ISO dial would be nice and if I’d been in charge of designing the 50R, I would have set the ISO dial around the shutter speed dial as is the case on the X-Pro 2. Semantics aside it is a camera with a sensor that is larger than the 35mm full frame sensors of many of today’s DSLRs. Film Simulation effects, such as ACROS for ultra high-quality monochrome and CLASSIC CHROME for a documentary-themed look, can also be applied to video. These points aside though, the ergonomics of the camera are excellent and it handles extremely well. When I started out, I was convinced that once the testing was over, I’d revert to using the 50S as my main camera. This is a camera which I would recommend unreservedly to any landscape photographer looking for the ultimate in image quality. As seen above, Fujifilm GFX 50R has a 4.0x Larger sensor area than Fujifilm X-T3. Flash photography need not be as complex and technical as many make it. At 775g, it’s 50g lighter than its older sibling and 230g lighter than a Nikon D850, which is quite a noticeable difference. The control systems, menus, and features are largely similar to the other cameras in the Fuji lineup, and where it shines for me, is in the landscape. A couple of months down the line, and I’m not so sure. Enjoy GFXMagazine and GFX Today for digital medium format photography adventures. This is largely due to Fuji’s determination to make this the first medium format camera with IBIS (in-body i… Reducing the number of external controls not only gives the camera a neater appearance, but it also allows for sensible placing of the buttons. I have to admit I was sceptical about this at first, but having been shooting with the camera for a few weeks now, I find it works well. This, combined with the fact that the GFX 50R will meter and focus very accurately in low light and an EVF which ‘sees’ very clearly in low light, makes long exposure photography a breeze. I decided to shoot with it exclusively for a few weeks to familiarise myself with it and test its capabilities. I got the chance to spend two weeks in shooting in the Dolomites with the Fujifilm GFX 50R earlier this month, and here's a review I put together. Although slightly smaller than the one on the 50S, the EVF is slightly more comfortable to use, with less of the ‘shimmer’ which has bothered some users. Full disclosure, I'm a Fujifilm brand ambassador, so obviously I'm pre-disposed to enjoy their cameras, but I also try to ensure I'm as honest as possible about what I think about the cameras, both their good points and things that don't work for me. In today’s article, we’re going to use a simple one-light setup and a few minutes of post production to make a dramatic image. I have to say that despite shooting with the GFX 50S and 50R (read my review here), as well as being something of a fan of Fuji cameras generally, I really didn’t bond with the GFX 100 initially. Because of its rangefinder styling, the front grip is less substantial than SLR users will be used to, although you still get plenty of purchase on the body and the well-designed rear thumb rest means that the camera sits well in the hand. You can read all the specs on the Fuji site or by clicking the links in this article. The GFX 50R includes the same Fujifilm G Format 51.4-megapixel medium-format image sensor. GFX 50R + GF110mmF2 R LM WR @ 110mm, ISO 200, 1/1600, f/2.0. One bug I identified while carrying out this Fujifilm GFX 50R review is that exposure compensation can’t be used when the RGB histogram is activated in live view; this has been reported to Fujifilm and hopefully will be fixed in a firmware update. The headline specification is probably the price of £3,999; so it’s clearly aimed at tempting full-frame users to move across to medium format. In the first quarter of 2017, Fujifilm caused a stir when they introduced the GFX 50S – the cheapest medium format camera at the time and only the second mirrorless medium format body (the first being the Hasselblad X1D). This is clearly one of the strength of larger sensor format cameras. Is Photography Allowed During the UK Lockdown? With its slightly lower weight and smaller overall dimensions, it will certainly be the camera I pack when I’m travelling. The GFX 50S has been a big hit for Fujifilm, so the new camera comes as a bit of a surprise, being basically a repackaged 50S – it features the same sensor and processing engine and almost identical specifications, albeit housed in a sleeker, rangefinder-style body. So in my little write-up of the GFX 50R today I’m going to focus on exactly that. Dynamic range is also impressive and the GFX 50R renders extremely clean shadow detail. In short, this is the best image quality you will see without spending tens of thousands on a Phase One camera and back. To be fair to the 50S, its ergonomics are excellent and if you prioritise function over form, there’s little to complain about.
