Most anthropogenic (human-caused) drivers of mangrove destruction and degradation are the result of land use activities near human population centres along the coastal zone. It discusses generic modifications to coastal ecosystems in relation to specific human activities and introduces the various threats resulting from poorly managed activities. The results reveal a wide range in the intensity of impacts, providing insight into where coastal bays and seagrass beds are most affected by human activities and need management attention. To first understand the actual impact we have on coasts we have to understand what was before and what is now. For example in Moreton Bay, close to Brisbane, an estimated 20% of pre-European mangrove area has Coastal development linked to human settlements, industry, aquaculture, and infrastructure can cause severe impacts on near shore ecosystems, particularly coral reefs. Mangroves have the ability to absorb up to four times more carbon dioxide by area than upland terrestrial forests (Donato et al., 2011).The remarkable traits of the mangrove ecosystem translate into a wide variety of goods and services that we benefit from. In large, unnatural quantities these natural materials can be considered a pollutant. Yet, on a global scale, more than 35% of these habitats have been lost over the last two decades due to human activities and climate stressors. These activities may have direct or indirect effects on our changing coastlines.
